Biological therapy is the basis of Dr. Wöppel's holistic treatment concept. This is why we also call it basic biological therapy. Basic therapy serves to stimulate the various detoxification possibilities of our body via the liver, kidneys, intestines, skin and mucous membranes through homeopathic medication and intestinal cleansing, colon hydrotherapy (COHT), vitamins (antioxidants) and trace elements, enzymes, ozone therapy, oxygen multi-step therapy and other physical measures. Find out more about the individual procedures here.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants reduce the harmful effects of free radicals in the body. These are short-lived but highly reactive and aggressive molecules that are formed in the body through metabolic processes or through chemical substances or radiation. A healthy body has many protective mechanisms that immediately intercept and deactivate these free radicals. These include the body's own substances as well as antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, the trace element selenium, β-carotene or many secondary plant substances such as polyphenols or flavonoids, which can react with free radicals in the cells.
In the case of increased oxidative stress, e.g. as a result of environmental or heavy radiation exposure, inflammation or tumors in the body, but also any form of stress, the formation of free radicals can be increased to such an extent that the body's own protective systems are no longer sufficient. Damage can then occur, e.g. to cell membranes, cellular protein compounds such as enzymes or genetic material (DNA). It is now assumed that oxidative stress is often one of the causes of many diseases and complaints. These include lipid metabolism disorders, diabetes mellitus, chronic inflammation, allergies, as well as cardiovascular and oncological diseases.
The intake of vitamins and trace elements cannot and should not replace a healthy, wholesome diet. Nevertheless, an additional supply of radical scavengers can significantly reduce oxidative stress if the body's stores are often empty in stressful situations and during illness and the need is greatly increased. Vitamins and trace elements are not used uncritically or in the form of food supplements, but in therapeutic doses as oral drugs and infusions. Here is some information about vitamin D3, selenium and vitamin C.
Vitamin D3
Vitamin D has an effect on calcium metabolism and thus strengthens bones and muscles. It also has a positive effect on the immune system and cell metabolism. We therefore recommend taking vitamin D in combination with vitamin K2 not only for osteoporosis, but also for susceptibility to infections and chronic inflammatory and oncological diseases.
Selenium
Selenium is a vital trace element. The source of selenium in food is animal and plant protein. Selenium is a component of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which is involved in important metabolic processes and contributes to the detoxification of the body by defending against free radicals. Selenium is also important for an intact immune system. At the Hufeland Clinic, we use selenium in the form of tablets and infusions for preventive health care, for existing chronic diseases and for tumor therapy. In the case of tumor diseases, selenium can effectively help to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Vitamin C
In the course of evolution, humans have lost the ability to produce this vital vitamin themselves and have to take it in with food. Vitamin C is concentrated to varying degrees in the individual organs of the body. High concentrations reflect a high requirement. The highest concentrations are found in the liver, adrenal glands, eye lenses, brain and immune cells. Vitamin C is indispensable in our body for strengthening the immune system, stimulating the hormonal and nervous system, regulating fat metabolism, stimulating the detoxification system, forming and maintaining the function of bones and connective tissue and in wound healing. Vitamin C is also an important free radical scavenger and plays an important role in inflammatory diseases and radiation exposure.
Vitamin C high-dose infusion therapy
The basis of vitamin C high-dose therapy is the realization that the vitamin C requirement for numerous diseases is far higher than can be supplied to the organism via the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, absorption through the intestinal mucosa is often reduced due to illness. Sometimes therapeutically effective vitamin C levels can only be achieved by supplying vitamin C directly to the body via the bloodstream, i.e. as an infusion. As vitamin C is water-soluble, the body cannot build up large stores. Excess vitamin C is excreted again. The risk of overdosing is therefore low. Vitamin C high-dose therapy often also proves helpful and promotes healing during the recovery phase after serious illnesses and operations. A significant improvement in viral, bacterial or fungal infections has also been proven. Infusion therapy with vitamin C has also proven its worth as a biological restorative treatment for general weakness, susceptibility to infections and loss of performance.
Ozone therapy
While the oxygen in the air we breathe is made up of two oxygen atoms (O2), ozone (O3) consists of three oxygen atoms and is therefore particularly reactive. When it is therefore brought together with blood in medical applications as part of so-called "major autohaemotherapy", it reacts in a matter of seconds with components of the blood, which it converts into high-energy catalysts; in the process, ozone becomes pure oxygen again, which enriches the blood. Medical ozone is always a mixture of purest oxygen and purest ozone, about 99.5 % oxygen and only 0.5 % ozone. As the ozone molecule is not stable, it converts into pure oxygen, which makes the blood oxygen-rich and active, which can be recognized by the change from the initially dark red to a light red color of the blood (which is why ozone therapy is often called "blood washing").
Ozone also produces reaction products with the blood's own substances. These act as catalysts and - scientifically proven - activate the metabolism of red blood cells and tissue, improve the release of oxygen from the blood to the tissue, activate immune cells, release the body's own cytokines (interferons, interleukins, etc.) and help with detoxification by activating the body's own antioxidants and radical scavengers. The use of medical ozone to activate the immune system in cases of reduced resistance and oncological diseases, to optimize the metabolism, to revitalize the aging process or to treat inflammatory diseases is therefore very useful.
It can have a beneficial effect on concentration disorders, forgetfulness, general poor performance, unsteadiness when walking and dizziness, resulting in a significant improvement in quality of life. Numerous scientific publications have confirmed the benefits of this therapy. However, as with all other therapies, there is no predictable guarantee of success with ozone therapy.
Intestinal cleansing
The intestine is an important part of the body's own defense system and is home to around 70% of our white blood cells (leukocytes). There are various interactions between the immune system in the gut and the bacteria in the gut flora. For example, healthy intestinal flora stimulates the lymphocytes in the intestine to release certain messenger substances that are needed in the defense against pathogenic germs. Intestinal flora can also stimulate or inhibit the formation of antibodies. The composition of the intestinal flora has a direct influence on the barrier function of the intestinal mucosa. The microorganisms promote the renewal of the mucous membrane and strengthen the barrier between "inside" and "outside". When pathogenic germs overgrow in the intestinal flora, some substances and pathogens can enter the bloodstream that would not pass through the mucous membrane into the organism in a healthy state. The immune system is then activated and inflammatory processes occur.
A biologically oriented therapy will therefore always include the intestines in the treatment (= intestinal cleansing). Unfavorable eating habits (fast food, eating too much, especially too much animal food and meat, refined sugar, coffee, alcohol, nicotine) lead to intestinal sluggishness, the intestinal flora deteriorates and produces toxins such as phenols, cresols, lndols and histamines, which are reabsorbed into the bloodstream and burden our metabolism. When we eat right, we promote healthy intestinal flora, which plays a key role in improving our metabolism and building up our immune system.
In addition to a balanced, high-fibre diet, intestinal cleansing (see COHT) and the administration of microbial medication are also part of intestinal cleansing. These are killed or living bacteria that do not have pathogenic properties. They have a positive effect on the intestinal mucosa and its immunologically active components. In the case of chronic diseases, we see colon cleansing as a long-term therapy.
COHT - colon hydrotherapy
Colon enemas and enemas have been used as a detoxification therapy for centuries. In America, enemas with coffee are widely used for colon cleansing because the caffeine also promotes the flow of bile and activates the liver. It was also American scientists who adopted the old treatment method and laid the foundations for modern colon (= large intestine) hydrotherapy. Today, this can be carried out hygienically, comfortably and almost odor-free. As the colon hydrotherapy is administered lying down, it is very well tolerated by all patients.
How does colon hydrotherapy work?
On the day of the COHT, the night nurse administers a cleansing enema early in the morning to pre-cleanse the bowel. After the first bowel evacuation on the toilet, you will lie down on the couch. A short intestinal tube is inserted into the anus and connected to our colon hydro device. With gentle pressure and a soothing massage of the abdomen from the outside, water is let into the large intestine until you feel that it is enough. The contaminated water then flows automatically down the drain and another flush with fresh water can follow. We normally flush until the water comes out relatively clear again, which can take different lengths of time (approx. 3/4 hours). In contrast to enemas, colon hydrotherapy cleanses the entire large intestine, as the amount of fluid, which increases from rinse to rinse, reaches all parts of the large intestine. The abdominal massage has a wonderfully relaxing effect and also removes stubborn stool residues from your intestinal wall. Don't be afraid, nothing hurts. Relax and breathe in and out calmly, using abdominal breathing to allow the diaphragm to perform an internal abdominal massage. The more you can let go and relax, the less tense your bowels will be, the better the cleansing and the quicker you will experience success.
The COHT is only prescribed by a doctor and is not suitable for every patient! It is not a substitute for intestinal cleansing, which is only possible through a consistent change in diet. Patients who do not adhere to a sensible, wholesome diet are also unlikely to benefit from COHT.
