Fasting Mimicking Diet

Metabolic activation with targeted food intake

Fasting mimicking diet is a scientifically developed nutritional concept that activates key metabolic processes associated with traditional fasting, while maintaining a low, precisely defined food intake. A plant-based diet with a significantly reduced calorie and protein content for a few days puts the body into a fasting-like metabolic state.

Unlike therapeutic fasting according to Dr. Buchinger, which involves completely abstaining from solid food, fasting mimicking diet allows small meals to remain part of the program. The aim is to stimulate regenerative processes such as cellular self-cleaning (autophagy), metabolic change, and insulin sensitivity – while at the same time making it more suitable for everyday life.

Simulated fasting is particularly suitable for people who want to benefit from the positive effects of fasting but do not wish to completely abstain from food.

Medical supervision is a matter of course. Every fasting cure includes an initial consultation with a doctor and an assessment by our trained team of fasting coaches. Our nursing team is also available to assist you with any complaints you may have during your stay.

Like our other fasting programs, simulated fasting is embedded in a holistic concept of exercise, relaxation, and naturopathic support—with the aim of providing lasting impetus for metabolic health and prevention.

FAQ

Therapeutic fasting according to Dr. Buchinger

Therapeutic fasting involves largely abstaining from solid food for a limited period of time. However, it is not a zero-calorie diet: around 200–300 kilocalories are consumed daily in the form of freshly prepared vegetable broths and juices. Water and herbal teas supplement the program. The aim is to put the metabolism into a clear fasting state and activate the body's own regeneration and cleansing processes.

Fasting mimicking diet

Fasting mimicking activates the central metabolic processes of fasting without completely abstaining from food. Over several days, a precisely defined, low-calorie, low-protein, predominantly plant-based diet is consumed. This puts the body into a fasting-like metabolic state, while small meals are still allowed. This form is particularly suitable for people who want to benefit from the effects of fasting but do not want to completely abstain from food.

Alkaline fasting

Alkaline fasting involves three alkaline-rich meals a day. Vegetables, salads, fruit, and selected plant-based foods form the basis of the diet. Acid-forming foods are deliberately avoided in order to regulate the acid-base balance and gently relieve the body—without changing the metabolism into a classic fasting state.

Which type is right for me?

  • Are you looking for an intensive metabolic change and a classic fasting experience? → Therapeutic fasting

  • Would you like to achieve fasting-like effects while still eating small meals? → Simulated fasting

  • Do you prefer gentle relief with three meals a day? → Alkaline fasting

We would be happy to advise you individually on which type of fasting best suits your health goals and personal circumstances.

Fasting according to Dr. Buchinger can be done alone or in a group at the Hufeland Clinic. Our experience has shown that the positive fasting experience is enhanced by the sense of community in a group. This is why we offer specific group dates (courses start on Saturdays).

You are also welcome to book your fasting stay separately from the group offers (flexible choice of dates).

Fasting once or twice a year is certainly recommended. More than 3 months for 7 days is not recommended.

The optimal fasting duration is individual. We recommend a fasting period of at least one week. Longer periods are also possible, depending on the effects you want to achieve. We also attach great importance to the subsequent build-up days and therefore also support you during this phase of the fast.

In contrast to traditional therapeutic fasting, pseudo-fasting does not usually require initial bowel emptying with Glauber's salt, as small, defined meals continue to be consumed.

However, depending on the individual situation and condition, gentle support of bowel function may be beneficial. The aim is to promote well-being during the metabolic change and to avoid possible side effects such as bloating or sluggishness.

We will discuss whether and in what form accompanying intestinal support is recommended on an individual basis during the initial medical consultation. If necessary, proven naturopathic procedures are available at our clinic.

As a participant in a fasting cure at the Hufeland Clinic, you will receive medical care, starting with an intake consultation. Depending on the fasting arrangement and your personal situation, we will also prepare a blood count. As a clinic equipped for internal medicine, we also have the option of further diagnostics, e.g. ECG and ultrasound examinations. If you have any pre-existing conditions (e.g. diabetes or high blood pressure), you will be monitored more closely. In any case, our medical team is available to you at any time should you experience any side effects or discomfort during our fasting offers.

In medical emergencies, medical staff are available around the clock (you can reach them at night via an emergency bell). There is a doctor on call.
